Maternal and Child Health
The First 1,000 Days
The first 1,000 days from conception to a child’s second birthday determine lifetime health and cognitive potential. ACHILD Kenya ensures that mothers and babies receive the care they need during this irreplaceable window.

The Reality
Nyamira County records 78 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. Migori records 254. Most of these deaths are preventable. Mothers die from haemorrhage, eclampsia, and sepsis because they delivered alone or without skilled care. Their babies die because no one was there to resuscitate them in the first minutes of life.
What We Do
We train Community Health Promoters who walk with mothers through pregnancy. They deliver antenatal education in households. The CHPs ensure mothers attend at least four clinic visits and embrace a balanced nutritional diet. They prepare families for delivery and arrange for transport when labour begins. They also visit within 48 hours after birth to check on the mother and baby. They track the baby’s growth every month for two years. They are trained to refer the mother or child immediately when danger signs appear.
We support skilled birth attendance. We ensure that every enrolled mother delivers with a trained attendant who can manage complications. We equip health facilities with referral systems for emergencies. We follow up on every referral to ensure mothers and babies reach specialized care.
We provide family planning counselling so that mothers can space pregnancies and recover fully between births.
